Papercraft Final Post

Image
Due to current events the rest of the semester in the class has been cut short. At the current time, I will not be able to finish my papercraft project. I did have quite a good time working on this project and would like to attempt to produce a final version of what I have envisioned. I did learn a number of important lessons while I was working. As seen in the pictures above I was not a decent way thought my final prototype. The first mistake I made was the print of the main body of the ds it is backwards. This will probably make me remember to invert my design before printing if I attempt it in the future. Another mistake was making some connections too small this lead to the model breaking and overall giving it a not too appealing look. This mistake was from Rhino where I thought just because it works there it would work on paper; another aspect to it was me not taking into consideration the size of the cut itself. I did, however, really enjoy the size of the proto...

Papercraft Object: Prototype

Image
This week we took a big step into our milestone project. We had to make prototypes of our final designs. I was quite unsure of what to make for this project; nothing really came to mind when thinking about an object. It was when Byran mention that someone had done a Gameboy that it felt like more options had opened up for me. I decided to make a ds console because I feel that--primarily on my childhood--I have spent a significant amount of time with the console. The first thing to do was to create the 3d model in Rhino. This was rather fast by using both pictures and real-life references. the ds I decided to make id based on the "new 3ds xl" line of consoles.  After printing, then came the cutting, folding and glueing the paper. This proved to be somewhat challenging for someone with no experience in this department. The biggest problem by far was being able to give the ds the signature laptop close and open. After some trial and error, I decided to go with...

Papercraft Objects: Digital Samples

Image
For this week we had to produce a total of ten concepts in rhino. The concepts had to start as a three-dimensional object that I would need to unfold. The objective was to get a lot of practice in so rhino starts to feel more natural.  Object 1 This was the first object I unfolded and I would say it is representative of a cube.   Object 2 With this object, I wanted to step out of my comfort zone and try something more abstract.   Object 3 Again I wanted to try some abstract shape. this started to solidify the whole process.   Object 4 I wanted to try something more complex with this one. I also was thinking about the light from a lighthouse while making this specific one.   Object 5 In this one, I wanted to see how something with a square base would unfold if it had more points in its top.   Object 6 In this piece, I wanted to see how something that is quite slanted would unfold.   Object 7 With ...

Papercraft Research

Image
For this week I’ll be doing research on a specific artist in the field of papercraft. The immediate  association, of someone who is not familiar with papercraft art, is that of simplistic and easy to do.  However, papercraft can be quite difficult and time-consuming. The end result of papercraft is an impressive and quite beautiful piece that is completely unique to its medium. I have decided to do my research on Nahoko Kojima, perhaps the most known and influential kirie artist.  The whole process for one of the most recent Kojima pieces took a whole year from concept to completion. Her research for shiro, the life-sized blue whale, took months. Kojima draws an initial  continuous drawing that then becomes what her final design, she then prints it with custom paper made for her. Kojima works traditionally by cutting all pieces by hand; she is known to alter designs as part of her process, making all her works hard to recreate in their entirety. ...

Final version - Life savings

during the critique, I found lots of varying opinions regarding most of my concepts. After taking the general comments about my concepts I decided to go with the piggy bank which got the most feedback and overall positive outlook. The feedback I got from my peers about the piggy concept made me realize that it had the most potential for possible commentary and substance.  the most significant aspect of the critique that I decided to add was the coins; they serve to fuel the idea that the wrong thing is being stored and what should be is only used to prop up the problem. refined concept and original comparison   finally, The relationship between this object and remix culture. The process of going through lots of different objects to find ones with interesting implications and connections is a real-time shink; however, finding the connections is something exciting. for this project finding these two objects was a process and this concept started by combining so...

Remix Culture

Image
In the second week of 3d object design we looked at the topic of Remix Culture. The main idea is taking multiple objects that have already been created and mixing them in a thoughtful and calculated way to try to say something. This week's project is an exploration into Remix culture; while taking the concept in to mind we must produce objects by mixing already made ones. 1. Greeting cup The idea with this is the presume relationship that many people have with coffee. A really friendly and sweet relation that at the very least I see.
